KALEIDOSCOPE ART

A kaleidoscope is a multi dimensional tool for self discovery.  A tool for experiencing alternative identities by immersing yourself in shape and colour,  freeing yourself of ego identity seeing yourself and others in a different light…illuminated.  Become immersed in colour so alive you can taste it.
Kaleidoscope means to view beautiful forms.  Engaging with one reflects your beauty and that of others.  Playing with magic and illusion unpacks layers of reality that are universal.  Kaleidoscopes encourage you to question how you see things and reality.  It is a journey into reflection and perception.
A kaleidoscope is a metaphor for the world.  We all have a place in the ever changing whole.  Seeing things from different perspectives.  It is uplifting, encouraging communication between people through laughter, play and movement.  Learning through play and building self esteem while stimulating the right brain state of meditation.
The analogue hand build projector is similar to how the Victorian magic lanterns worked in the late 19th century.  It was the pre cinema  device for entertainment.  It is operated and made by hand something that is becoming a lost art in the digital age.

‘ In Living Colour ‘ kaleidoscope installation.

This is an interactive participatory installation with an analogue kaleidoscope projector.  The image is projected creating an ever changing smorgasbord of colours projected onto reflective layers of skin, lace, fabric and clothing.  Live music inspires and at the same time is inspired by, engaging with the spectacle while performers encourage the audience to participate in the experience of using their bodies as a canvas for light paintings.

The participants experience the light moving, fracturing, splintering and exploding in magnificent colours and textures on their own and others skin and clothing.  At first people witness an unusual light show but soon they become involved with the spectacle and their own bodies reflecting the light.  All around are mirrors that reflect the beauty that is within us once we remove our masks.  The audience are the participants, seeing others and themselves in a new light…illuminated.

‘When you take part what happens is that in the kaleidoscope image your identity dissolves and then you start building new identities together with others, it is really beautiful.  You become part of a more comprehensive pattern and gain different perspectives about your identity through a shared anonymity, which becomes somehow significant.  Also when you see the image afterwards there is a lot of visual material to reflect with as a group and individually as well as set as product in the form of photo images. A perfect conversation starter.  And being visual of course it stimulates the emotional side of the brain and best it is fun.  Potentially a great peace education tool I think and a memorable experience.’
